Modern Australian Furniture inspired by Japanese Shizen Design Philosophy

“ effortlessly authentic furniture”

Shizen is a philosophy of deep respect for nature and how it merges with us. It is a design style that allows the simplicity, materials, and asymmetry found in nature to meld with our lives.

How do I think?

Why do you do what you do?

  • Why do we have dining tables?

  • Why does forcing a relationship fail?

How do these questions relate?
Simply, the thread that binds these two questions is authentic values.
A dining table isn't valuable because it is made from the highest-quality materials - it is valuable because eating and socialising with others is valuable to you. Forcing a relationship is like swimming against the current- It is tiring not because the current is strong, but because you value things moving in different directions. Aligned values allow the relationship to flow naturally.

I design furniture because I want you to live in alignment with your values.

How does it nourish you?

Walking in nature has always nourished my soul. Whether it is the trees’ shade swaying in the breeze on a walk through a forest, or bathing in the soothing sounds of flowing water from a river or creek. These places bring me back to the present moment in ways that feel right.

In a way, nature can not help but be authentic. It is not trying to be anything, yet it is incredibly beautiful. I suppose all of my work seeks to bring that feeling of authenticity inspired by nature into the home.

The other element of this work that nourishes me is the challenge of doing something difficult that takes a lot of time to master. It sustains my interest unlike any other discipline has in my life.

What do you need?

If you ask yourself the questions above, it will be very clear what needs you have.

You’ll have social, emotional, functional and spiritual needs.

I need 6 seats at a table because I value socialising with my family of 6.

I need to touch wood because I value the feeling natural materials give me.

I need an organised cabinet with x amount of drawers because I value clarity of mind free from clutter.

I need to be near things that remind me of the sea because I value my connection to it through my love of sailing.
